Virus and Security News

See the link below to gain a more detailed explanation, I should note that as of the writing Microsoft has not received any reports of hacking utilizing this vulnerability. However it is an open threat and now that details have been published I'm sure someone may try. It affects media player, windows 2000 and windows XP, instant messenger. Some vulnerabilities are worse then others.

Now I'll decode some of this for you PNG (Portable Network Graphic) is a graphical format like TTF, and in fact was intended back in 1997 to replace .GIF.The attacks could come through e-mail where someone might send you some pictures, look at the file extension. This may come through instant messenger content, once infected the computer could, I repeat could be completely controlled remotely by the attacker. In the news letter you'll see to word spoof as it applies to instant messenger which means someone has your login information and is masquerading as you. As you all know from my previous messages spoofing can also happen with e-mail. The term "headers", at the risk of being over simplistic, relate to web pages.

At this point I will direct you to the link below this is a complex issue, if you have questions, please be specific and e-mail them along. I DO NOT want to encourage panic after all Microsoft has said they are unaware of any such attack, but I DO want to encourage you to make sure you are updated with windows updates. In internet explorer go to tools, in the drop down menu Windows updates.

As always keep your windows updates up, your internet security updated, and for those I've recommended Pest Patrol to do updates and scans routinely. These precautions plus a weary eye on your e-mail, and watch what you download will help keep you safe.
